About ÀKANBÍ
Damy Adesanya is a Fashion Engineer best known for his use of African wax print fabrics to create modern and contemporary designs with his clothing brand, ÀKANBÍ.
He was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria but moved to
the U.S for college in 2001. Although, he enjoys his career as an Information
Technology Engineer, he found his passion for fashion and creative
designs. ÀKANBÍ Clothing was inspired by
his daughter, Caitlyn Ayobami
Growing
up in Nigeria, Damy always made it a priority to travel back to his home country to
visit his parents yearly, and for the first time, he brought his daughter with
him in July 2015. Their trip to Nigeria ended up being an amazing experience as
he watched her discover Nigeria’s beautiful heritage and culture with her extended
family. While they were in Nigeria, he bought Caitlyn some clothes that were made
with African print fabrics and when they returned to the U.S., they wore the clothes
designed with African fabrics to special occasions. They were given many
compliments regarding the uniqueness of the fabrics and the more they wore
them, the more he was asked where others could get similar clothing.
Damy
recognized there was limited access to authentic African fabrics in the U.S.
and he decided to bridge the gap since many people living here have never had
the opportunity to own and wear beautiful authentic African print fabrics. So,
he created ÀKANBÍ.
ÀKANBÍ’s mantra is to be Bold and Stylish. The clothing brand is known for showcasing
modern and contemporary designs that evokes African culture and heritage
through fashion. As the Fashion
Engineer, Damy strives to deliver bold designs that allow even the most
conservative person feel stylish, regal, confident and unique all at the same
time.
Damy (aka Damy ÀKANBÍ) continues to push fashion
boundaries by consistently highlighting ÀKANBÍ’ objectives in every collection,
image and fashion show. They are to:
·
Share the African culture and heritage with customers
through fashion.
·
Showcase the beauty of African-inspired products
through fashion.
·
Inspire and motivate customers through fashion.
He enjoys creating new experiences with his daughter
Ayobami, and when he’s not busy designing, he volunteers with kids and enjoys
other activities like, golf, tennis, running, cooking, dancing, reading and
mountain biking. He is an active mentor with BIG Brother and Big Sister of
Central Florida, STEM foundation and the Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve
Harvey foundation.
The
Meaning of ÀKANBÍ: It's an alias given
to the first male child born after a female child in the Yoruba tribe from
Nigeria, West Africa. It means "Next Born".
Be
BOLD, Be STYLISH, Be ÀKANBÍ
